A customs charge is a fee imposed by a country’s customs authorities when goods exceed the 'tax-free' import allowance. Travelers are allowed to bring in a certain value of goods without paying taxes, but if this limit is exceeded, customs charges are applied to the excess amount.
Why do I have to pay customs charges?
Customs charges are applied when you or a member of your party exceed the tax-free import allowance. These fees are determined by the relevant customs authorities based on the value and type of goods you’re bringing into the country. AirPortr has no influence or visibility into these decisions made by customs.
How are customs charges handled by AirPortr?
If customs charges are imposed on your baggage, they must be paid to release your luggage for onward delivery. To avoid delays, AirPortr will pay these charges on your behalf (up to a maximum of CHF300) and automatically recoup the amount from your payment card. You will receive both your customs receipt and AirPortr’s payment details. There is no service fee for this process.
What happens if the customs charge exceeds CHF300?
If customs charges exceed CHF300, AirPortr will contact you directly. You will need to liaise with the customs authorities to arrange payment and recover your baggage. In this case, AirPortr cannot proceed with delivery until the charges are settled.
For any questions regarding customs fees or to understand your tax-free allowance, please consult your destination country’s customs regulations.
